We analyzed the clonal expression of the transformation-associated cell surface antigens (TAAs) of rat fetal fibroblast WFB, as defined by monoclonal antibodies # 109 and # 061. These monoclonal antibodies recognized 86 kDa and 62 kDa molecules, respectively, each composed of a single polypeptide chain. Our data suggest that these TAAs were important in the anti-tumor surveillance mechanisms of the host NK cells, since they appear to have acted as part of the target structure for the cytotoxicity by the NK cells. The 86 kDa molecule might be involved in the lethal hit phase of cytotoxicity by the NK cells, whereas the 62 kDa molecule might be involved in other functional phases, such as the cell adhesion process between effector and target cells. In contrast, other TAAs seemed not to be involved in NK lysis. These data indicate that at a clonal level, certain TAAs, but not all, could play critical roles as part of the NK target structure.
