The rise of Christian monasticism in fourth century C.E. is one of the most significant developments in the religious history of late antiquity. The purpose of this article is to highlight the uniquness of early monastic asceticism through an analysis of this tradition's demonology. In early monastic litterature, four significant tendencies can be found. 1) Spatial representations are generally geometric or horizontal rather than cosmological, and the same viewpoint is found in demonological representations. 2) Matters of "practical" import, such as the identification of evil spirits manifest in human emotions, are laid out in a "demonological geography," in which a representation of a desert serves as a battlefield thronged with armies of angels and demons. This representation became the background motif of monastic demonology. 3) Incidents of demonic encounter were regarded as important opportunities for spiritual progress, and were viewed positively by monks of this tradition. 4) Retreat into the desert by monks was not a product of misanthropy, but was rather intended to actualize a spiritual war against evil spirits and was an attempt to attain salvation for them and lay people in the world. Compared with other exhortations within demonology that urged a retreat from the material cosmos and contact with the masses, and in contrast to the asceticism of Porphyry the Neo-Platonist and to the Gnostic prescription of ascetic life as the means of world salvation, by maintaining a positive evaluation of demonic experience and a strong commitment to the promotion of the good of world of lay people, early Christian monastic asceticism was one step ahead of its ancient philosophical and religious predecessors.
