This paper makes a comparative study of the difference between the published version ofMan'yo-Shusuisho by Kitamura Kigin and its manuscript ("the first draft") owned by the Iwase Library in order to illustrate the author's shift of writing attitude between the two.In the first draft, Kigin mainly bases his annotation on Sengaku and his book Sengakusho. On the other hand, the published version shows a stronger influence of Fujiwara Teika and Sougi -who were the authorities on poetics in the Middle Ages - and other of poetics than that of Sengaku.Such shift of attitude is also observed in the preface of the book, especially in one passage in it where he explains why he does not quote Sengakusho in some parts of his study. For example, he mentions in the first draft, "There is no other way [than to omit Sengaku's comments] to meet mydeceased master's [his master Matsunaga Teitoku's] will." This vague and passive explanation, however, changes into clearer and more convinced one as we find in the published version, "I follow the examplesof the great ancient scholars [rather than relying on Sengaku alone]. This is my deceased master's will".This change of Kigin's attitude, as the present study would suggest, can be attributed to his intention to make his Man'yo-Shusuisho an introductory book for beginners.
