At the time a depopulation phenomenon distinctively emerged in Japan, Yoneyama (1969)assumed the phenomenon as cultural change and studied a case of a depopulated village in southern mountainous Nara Prefecture with a perspective of giving attention to individual behaviors and thoughts.Following his perspective, this study begins with examining Yoneyama's recommendations conceming vitalization of depopulated localities. It examines a case of Mio District, Higashiyoshino Village, one of depopulated localities by delineating recent internal and external movements involved in the district, waysof villager's coming to have inventive ideas in such movements and the relations of such movements and ideas with local vitalization and assistance for it. Specifically it analyzes the actualization process of the district head's idea of accommodating the initial short-term Japanese language session for Chinese trainees in national foreign trainee system, the process of interactions between college students who did short-termfieldwork in the district and the district residences, and the supplemental case of sustained activity of traditional cloth production in Tsukigase, Nara Prefecture.Findings are the importance of interactive learning from other's responses to the same things and scenes through presenting even misunderstandings to others, the importance of recognizing that an opportunity comes at one time and does not necessary last long and thus it is sometimes needed to keeppersistency toward what is thought important for the locality. This study contends that in order to lead local lives in sustainable, safe and stable manner, it is necessary not to satisfy only with receiving or accepting new opportunities but to seek inventive ideas out of the opportunities and to discover unexpected connections of things and relations at hand, and then to organize things and relations into one activity or system and develop it according to the context of local lives. Such development would need anew movement, whether internal or external, that eventually proves to be assistance for local vitalization.
