Low Countries and England had close relations through the trade of wools. Each protected the trade and kept good political relations to ensure it.In the beginning of 16th century the Kings of England, who claimed to be "King of France", were the ally for the Habsburgs who ruled Low Countries against France, and got financial rewards. But after Treaty of Madrid was concluded between Emperor Charles V of Habsburgs andFrancis 1, King of France in 1526, England chose a different way. Henry VIII, the king of England, decided to be on French side against the Habsburg, because England could not intervene in the treaty. The consequent decrease of trade brought England and Low Countries the negotiation of the reconstruction of relations. After the negotiation between Henry and Margaret of Austria, aunt of Charles V and thegovernor of Low Counties, the new truce, the Peace of Cambrai was concluded in 1529. The Peace of Cambrai decided that the king of France would pay 290,000 ecus to the king of England which Charles should pay to Henry VIII.The complicated situatipn of Low Counuies is thus clear through the connection with England.Low Countries had two aspects, as one of the territories by Habsburgs and as Low Countries themselves which had their own interests.
