The theme of the paper is to investigate how the perception of cultural similarities between Koreans and Japanese hinders communication between the two nationalities. First. how much the two cultures has been perceived as similar is introduced. Second, further negative (perceptual) problems which stem from the perception are described. They are: simplicifation of differences. lack of interest in learning about the other culture, low regard for the other culture, purported identical ways of thinking, empathic illusion. and mutual hatred. Third. existing solutions are examined. Finally, one tentative solution, to examine differences among similarities, is offered.
