Last year, an exhibition of Ancient GreekArt from the Louvre Museum was held atThe University Art Museum, Tokyo NationalUniversity of Fine Arts and Music (June 17 -August 20, 2006). Of the Louvre's collection of over350,000 works, 134 works from the Departmentof Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquitieswere displayed. The Attic red - figure skyphosby the Penelope Painter (Louvre G372, Fig.1)who was active in Greece around 450-400BC,which is discussed in this paper, was one of theworks in the collection. Called The Building ofthe Acropolis, the skyphos depicts the goddess Athena and a giant named Gigas on side A and two male figures on side B. The figures on bothsides are spaciously arranged, with fine linesexpressing the details of their faces and muscles. Robert D. Cromey argues many issuessurrounding this work in a paper he presentedin 1991, but, to my knowledge, no paper hasbeen written since then that discusses thisskyphos or that focuses on the Penelope Painterand his works. In this paper, I will consider thecharacteristics and styles of his work whichhave yet to be addressed independently, basedon Cromey's study, and attempt to position thisskyphos in his entire works. In particular, I will compare the style that links the themes ofside A and side B, which was also pointed outby Cromey as a feature of his work, with that of the Lewis Painter, a noted skyphos painterfrom a slightly earlier period. The two aresaid to have been master and pupil, and I willconsider the influence of the Lewis Painter onthe works of the Penelope Painter, especiallythis skyphos, from a comparison of theirstyles. Using data from internet search sitesincluding the Beazley Archive, I have classifiedthe works of the Penelope Painter according tothe degree of background decoration. Based onthis classification, I will attempt to position theskyphos in his entire works.
