We can construe the emotional states of fictional characters from narrative text. Some research has shown that even young children can perform this operation. However, the cognitive processes by which children and adults come to understand the emotional states of characters have not been compared empirically. This research aimed at examining how children differ from adults in their interpretation of the emotional states of fictitious characters. I focused on “search inference” performed in narrative reading. In this study, two kinds of search inference were defined: situation-based and perspective-based. The results revealed that the difference between a child and an adult in understanding a character's emotional state depends on whether search inference is performed.
