Samuel Tayler Coleridge's 'Frost at Midnight' (1798) and 'Dejection: An Ode' (1802) are the poems which show the process of the poet's struggle for poetic integration. The poetic integration herein investigated consists of two types of internal meanings for the poet. The first one is the effort to show his poem as a self-sufficient artistic object. The second one is the wish to compose his disorganized self and to attain self-salvation through artistic creation. 'Frost at Midnight' presents a time structure with 4 different phases. These aspects are to be overcome with a miraculous mintegration of the quadruple-layered temporal scheme. The chief image which make this synthesis possible is that of the "unseen" frost. 'Dejection: An Ode' delineates the loss of artistic imagination of the poet. I explored the process in which this fragmentation of his spirit is arrested through his affection to Sara Hutchison. Coleridge's two types of poetic integration can be seen in these poems. The former type is associated with temporal scheme and the latter trpe with spatial scheme.
