At present, the museum curator’s course at the undergraduate level of universities in Japan is a part of vocational education. The course consists of the following types of curriculum: introductions to the museum, museum materials, museum management, museum information and museum training. However, many people having special experience with museums have been pointing out that this curriculum is not sufficient for training capable curators. Students do not always hope to become a curator, even when they start to study these subjects. Often, they cannot understand much about museums and the work of a curator before joining the course, but are simply very interested in them. This paper starts from the hypothesis that understanding about museums and the work of curators should be the premise for acquiring skills and knowledge necessary to become curator. As proof, it is proposed to add to the curriculum hands on “museum training” in order to gain real insight and make real progress. It was for practical study that students undertook field work, made reports, and set up an exhibition. As a result, several good educational results were produced: students could learn about the job of curator, gain knowledge and skills, learn group work, and felt a sense of accomplishment through the whole process. Vocational education has had the aim of teaching only the skills and knowledge necessary for the work. Thus, from the career educational point of view, this paper proposes that it is necessary to have two stages to train a curator. The first one involves learning to understand a museum and the work of a curator, moreover, deciding whether to select the course that leads to a career as a curator after graduation. The second stage involves taking a special course to master the skills and knowledge of a curator as a postgraduate. For this reason, as a first stage the modern museum curator’s course of undergraduates had better adopt a new curriculum in order to foster an understanding of the museum’s role and the work of a curator. Under such a curriculum, one important aim would be to get a good career as a curator. The curriculum would allow the students to practice in their second year because as third and forth year students they have to do job hunting. Before this period, they could then decide on a career as a curator based on the practice. In addition, a new curriculum would provide insight into the areas such as introduction to the museums, museum employees, the director, the curator, the educator, etc. At this stage, it is necessary for students to have a basic outline, to understand the museum, and the work of a curator.
