There is an urgent demand to build sustainable communities in the era of knowledge economy. Many experts and politicians expect schools could contribute to build sustainable communities and many educationists think that schools should lead the ethos of building sustainable communities. Apart from these ideas and suggestions, this paper concludes that schools couldn't build a sustainable learning community if the function of schooling were separated from the function of government, families, companies, and other public institutions. Traditionally, schools aim to cultivate Human Being especially in respect of moral and spiritual development. However, a learning community emphasizes on meeting all learning inquiries, which usually proposed by all local residents. Most of learning inquiries are connected with surviving and living, instead of the ideal of cultivation (Bildung in German or 教化 in Chinese). From this point of view, this paper thinks that schools couldn't build a sustainable learning community until the function of schools and the function of government, families and so on could be emerged together.
