Jack London(1876-1916)の南海ものの中でおそらくもっとも有名な"Koolau the Leper"(1908/5)は、ハワイ人のヒーローKoolauの演説ではじまる。自分たちをモロカイ島のハンセン病患者収容所に強制的に送りこもうとする白人たちに、最後まで抵抗するべきだと、クーローは仲間たちのハンセン病患者に熱弁をふるうのだ。ここでは、患者の隔離が問題というより、あきらかに、自分たちの自由が奪われること、自分たちの土地が奪われることに対して憤怒の声があげられている。つまり単純にいって、ハワイの男クーローによってアメリカ帝国主義が糾弾される。｢彼ら白人は、羊のようにやって来た。
