Kinkai Miwake-no-zu is a picture album including 107 landscape paintings whose scenery was taken during the coastal inspection executed in 1850. The inspection was made to increase the coastal defense of Edo, the city where the castle of Shogun was built, confronted by the emergence of foreign ships demanding the open of the country.Although it is unfortunate that there is no information about either the artist who made the album or the process through which it was produced, the sign attached to spear appearing most in the album indicates that it was produced under Yasunori TSUTSUI, one of the participates of the inspection.Kinkai Miwake-no-zu shows an influence of Yamato-e style. It shows a contrast with the fact that Koyo Tansho-zu, the forerunner of the picture albums of actual scenery strongly shows the influence of Chinese style., The depiction which influence Kinkai Miwake-no-zu the most is that of the illustrations of Meisyo zu-e, a travel guide which had been popular since the middle of Edo period. It is possible to point out that Kinkai Miwake-no-zu clearly demonstrates tne depiction of sceneries viewing the sea from the land. Although such depiction has no practical use, it is thought to be planned to represent the caution to the emergence of the forign ships.
