In recent Korean society, independence for young adults has become a topic of discussion in the society as well as individual lives. Prior research shows that the Korean young adults’ independence affects the parent-child relationships because it is said that the attachment among parents and the child is very strong in the Korean society. The purpose of this study is to examine the relation between young adults ’ independent consciousness and the parent-child relationship in Korea. I investigate How young adults experiencing various social changes recognize the relationship with their parents, and how their independent consciousness is affected by family standards. I performed a focus group interview on unmarried males and females ages 25-35 who were living in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do, Korea in 2006. I obtained the following results : Males thought that they must answer their parent’s expectations economically, whereas females felt the need for emotional intimacy from their parents until marriage. The rise in the unemployment rate has in creased the internal conflict for males, whereas social advance of females has heightened the internal conflict for females.
