One of the most impressive scenes in Soseki Natusme's 『SANSHIRO』 is that Mineko and Sanshiro meet on a campus by a pond. The picture of “Forest Woman” describing Mineko has provided an ample information for discussions of her character. However, there is another woman character who has yet not been mentioned in any of existing discussions. That is a ‘nurse'.This paper studies the perception of the history of nurses after the Meiji Era with the analysis of 「The Nurse」in a short novel called Hūyō Oguri. In addition, by analyzing Mineko, perceived as “New Woman”, and the nurse together, it defines the relations between the image of “New Woman”, which has been construed as the subject of a dualistic desire conveying conflicting ideas of ‘a sexual seducer' and ‘a wife of noble character', and the emblem of the nurse perceived as a dualistic image of ‘a whiterobed angel' and ‘ femme fatale'. On the basis of these facts, this paper discusses the possibility of transformation of ‘a white-robed angel' into a wife of noble character called, ‘the angel in the house'.
