This paper seeks to (i) introduce recent progress on both national and international statistics on time use to contribute to cross-national comparative research, (ii) make a preliminary statistical table on time use to compare the EU and Japan, and (iii) identify future tasks of cross-nationaltime use research for both statistical producers and users. In EU, the trial database of the Harmonised European Time Use Survey (HETUS) is now available through the Internet. In Japan, the Bureau of Statistics introduced some HETUS survey methods into the 2006 Survey on Time Use and Leisure Activities (STULA). A statistical table of time use of dual-earner couples in weekdays in selected EU countries and Japan is produced using these data. In the process of making the table, advances in cross-national comparison on time use were indentified. However, there are future tasks to betackled. For instance, statistical users should make optimum use of rich HETUS and STULA data, and statistical producers and users in Japan should promote an exchange of views on international development in timeuse research.
