More researchers have recently been beginning to acknowledge the importance of the role ofhistoriography in the history of political thought and to treat historiography as a critical part ofpolitical thought. Hume scholars are also nowadays devoting considerable attention to hishistoriography, History of England (1754-62). In this article, I investigate Hume’s historiographyof Scotland in his History of England, uncovering the reason why Hume,a Scot, engaged inwriting a history not of Scotland but of England. Hume subverted the tradition of Scottish Whig-Presbyterian historiography of ancient constitutionalism from a Royalist-Episcopalian perspective, while he also refuted another version of ancient Scottish constitutionalism of Royalist-Episcopalianism, seeing no ideal ancient constitution in the past of Scotland but only countlessfactions and disorder. According to Hume, it was only the union with England in 1707that gotrid of feudal anarchy and secured law and order there, which was a landmark in the history ofScotland.
