This study discusses the curriculum in Swedish upper secondary schools from a perspective of the system of elective subjects. In 1994, the national curriculum in Sweden was revised, and students' "freedom of choice" in making their own curriculum was emphasized. "Freedom of choice" was supported from the viewpoints of the entire public education, the municipalities or schools, and the students. The curriculum in which this idea is embodied includes (1) Compulsory subjects; (2) Compulsory subjects according to students' programs; (3) Compulsory subjects according to their branches; (4) Optional subjects in their programs; (5) Optional subjects that a student can take freely regardless of his or her program. This structure of curriculum has four opportunities of choice (2-5), and each has its own significance. Students specialize in one major by choosing subjects in their own program and branch, keeping possibilities for changing the major by taking the optional subjects. They can take subjects according to the request by the university to which they plan to attend. Organizing such opportunities of choice and giving each opportunity significance leads to making a relation between specialization for a student's future career and the student's freedom of choice.
