What with the shortage of food and the disorder of social situation, soon after the end of war, many cases of food toxicoses were reported from various places of the country. Especially, owing to the shortage of sweetflavoured substances, many people were poisoned, sometimes lethally, by taking sweet-flavoured substances which were called "Shiso-to" and "Bakudan-to", which were sold in the markets. These substances are, in fact, para-nitro ortho-toluidine, containing CH3, NH2 and NO2; we can easily prove, from the viewpoint of chemical constitution, that these substances are rich in toxicity. We can observe, as the main toxic symptoms caused by these substances, fever, the sense of gastric inflation, inappetence, jaundice, and jaundice of hepatic cell. And these effects on the epithelium of renal cell were complicated with renal degeneration. Examining the blood, we can observe anaemia and the increasing number of phagocytes at the time of death. If the mentioned substances are eaten habitually, there are changes in the blood and urine; we can observe the destruction of blood and at the same time the increasing quality of urobilin in urine, which is followed by the appearance of bilirubin. First the deportment of serum-bilirubin shows the direct delayed reaction, and then the two-phasic prompt-reaction, which is positive. The hepatic function is seriously hindered and this is caused later than the destruction of hematocyte. We can easily find, from the histological point of view, the retreating degeneration of hepatic cell, renal degeneration, and especially, the remarkable change consisting of hemato-chalybeate symptoms in the spleen. As mentioned above, the toxicosis caused by these substances is proved to set up jaundice of hepatic cell and renal degeneration. In conclusion, the sweetness of these substances is about 400 times as sweet as white sugar, but it contains deadly toxicity, causing the destruction of hemoglobin, the motor paralysic, the various retreating degeneration and disintegration of hepatic ce
