Thorn and his associates used as a criterion of adrenocortical function the fall in number of circulating eosinophils, which occur when an intact adrenal cortex is stimulated by the injection of purified pituitary adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH). Our observations were carried on the relation between pituitary adrenocortical functon to the circulating eosinophils in rats. Results are summarized as follows: 1) The number of circulating eosinophils decreased after a four hour rest period after the injection of adrenocortical extract (ACE), anterior pituitary hormone (PREHORMONE: we had used this preparation because ACTH was not available for our studies), posterior pituitary hormone, histamine, typhus vaccine, glucose, insulin and epinephrine, and increased slightly after the injection of KCl. 2) ACE was the only one which caused decreasing effect on the number of eosinophils in adrenalectomized animals. 3) The change in number of circulating eosinophils after injection of ACE serves as a measure for the standarization of this extract. 4) The injection of above described drugs with exception of ACE or PREHORMON did not result in a decrease of eosinophils after hydophysectomy. And particularly typhus vaccine showed a marked inrease of eosinophils in contrast to its normal effect. 5) As for the appearance of Selye's adaptation syndrome by stresses, it seems to be necessarily the normal function of the hypothalamus-hypophysisadrenal cortex system.
