Pierre is a book that forces us frustrated. This frustration, which loomsboth from its form and its substance, invites polar evaluations of the book:one that dismisses it for the very existence of this element, and the otherthat accepts it as reflecting the author's intention. These views, however,miss the mark as they neglect the author's view of fiction (Romance) that itshould present a world where the human pursuit of truth (Enthusiasm) ishighly evaluated. The view of fiction of this kind should not be underratedas it is rooted deep in the American intellectual tradition.
