The electroencephalograms (EEG) were recorded on four expert practitionersof Kanka-Taikyokuken during three sessions (the reference stage of eye-openedrelaxation, image training of the performance, and after the performance of Taikyokuken), and were compared with those of two control subjects. During thestages of image training and after performance, α-waves of expert practitioner'sEEG increased remarkably, even if their eyes were kept open. The above phenomenahad a clear contrast to α-attenuation of the beginner's EEG in the both stages. An expert practitioner of Yohshiki-Taikyokuken exhibited a significant decreaseof α-waves and the amplitude diminution after the performance. Although someinvestigators have previously reported EEG patterns during concentrated relaxation(e.g. Raj Yoga, Zen, transcendental meditation), most of them have demonstratedEEG changes between the meditative state and the awake-reference state without motion. Augmented alpha activity could also be seen in the expert practitionerof Kanka-Taikyokuken as well as the autogenic training, which seems to indicatethat the autohypnosis has something in common with these states.
