木曾馬の蹄は硬くて強いといわれている。そこで，木曾馬の蹄壁を走査型顕微鏡で観察を行なった。サラブレットより木曾馬の方が，保護層の中の角細管が細く緻密であった。Kiso horses are a Japanese native species. They have black hoofs which are considered to be hard and strong. Actually fitting of horseshoes is not necessary, if they are to be used in farm labor. This paper describes scanning electron microscopic findings of the hoof-wall of Kiso horses. The horn-tubes in the stratal medium of the hoof-wall were finer and more compact in Kiso horses, compared to the Thoroughbreds.
