The present investigation was undertaken to clarify the vegetative propagation of cyclamen by notching of tubers, and to ascertain the cultural aptitude of vege-tatively propagated plants. The experiments were carried out 1967-1981 in the Laboratory of Olericulture and Floriculture, Faculty of Agriculture, Shinshu University. 1. Notching method of tuber and internal or external conditions for multiplication. Cylamens could be vegetatively propagated by means of notching the tuber into one centimeter square or radial pattern on the cut surface after about one third of the upper part of the planted tuber was scooped. In this case, curing the notched tuber for five to twelve days at 30℃ under high relative humidity and then keeping it at about 20℃ were favorable for the formation of adventitious buds. Soil moisture should be maintained at pF 2.71 to 2.75 for three or four weeks after notching, in order to avoid bacterial decay by suppressing bleeding from the cut surface. From the finding on the developmental progress of mother tubers, the desirable time for tuber notching was supposed to be one or two months from the final stage of flowering period. It was suggested that the regeneration ability on the notched tuber became lower as age of mother plants advanced, however, it might be able to be kept high by repeating vegetative propagation up generation by generation. The varietal difference of adventitious bud formation on the notched tuber was examined with twelve cultivars. The rate of adventitious bud formation at about seven months after notching was 91-100% in eight cultivars and 81-88% in four cultivars. And the average rate of all cultivars was 92%. 2. Effect of plant growth regulaters. Effect of NAA or TIBA and adenine, NAA or TIBA and kinetin, NAA and BA, alone or in combination, on the formation of adventitious buds on tuber segments was examined. The spray treatment of TIBA 0. 5-5 ppm in combination with adenine 50 ppm and the immersing treatment of TIBA 0.5-5 ppm in combination with kinetin 20 ppm were considerably effective to the formation of adventitious buds on the segment. However, the treatment with high concentrations of NAA, TIBA and BA inhibited or delayed the formetion of adventitious buds. 3. Growth of vegetatively propagated plants. The growth was compared between plants vegetatively propagated by tuber notching and seedlings, using the cultivar 'Salmon Scarlet'. The growth of vegetatively propagated plants seemed to be almost similar to that of seedlings, but vegetatively propagated plants produced more flowers. The growth of plants propagated by tuber notching extending to two generations was examined with ten cultivars. Plants of seven cultivars in the second generation grew similarity shown in the first generation, but the growth of the others was slightly inferior to that in the first generation. For the test of seed productivity, the second generation plants of `Salmon Scarlet' yielded economicaly desirable quantity of seeds. 4. Anatomical observation of initiation of adventitious bud primordia. The primordia of the adventitious buds developed from the inside of endodermis on the scooped surface of the tuber, on the margin of the scooped surface or on the periderm of the tuber as the position of scooping lowered in tuber hight. In the case of adventitious bud formation from the inside of endodermis, the primordia occurred in the vascular cut end or its periphery. On the other hand, in the case of adventitious bud formation on the margin of the scooped surface, the primordia occurred in the cork cambium, where old periderm and new wound-periderm joined together. In the case of adventitious bud formation on the periderm, the primordia originated from the cork cambium in the periderm. 5. From the results mentioned above, it has been definitely shown that cyclamen can be vegetatively propagated by means of notching the tuber, and that cultural aptitude of vegetatively propagated plants was little different from that of seedlings.
