In fruit and vegetable retailing of Japan, family management and small scale type is common, and it is said that this is the reason why the retailing is inefficient and it gets high margin. But it is not enough to be estimated the performance of retailing only by its margin. The aim of this paper is to make clear the pattern of existence of fruit and vegetable retailing and also discuss on the foundation of existence. Many fruit and vegetable retailings are growing gradually. These retailings have adopted the active market conduct to emphasize their characteristics, and they make every efforts, comparing with supermarket, to supply convenience services, variety of fruits and vegetables and good quality. It may be said that these growing types of retailing have found their own particular foundation in these efforts.
