A compound fertilizer of 20-12-21 grade containing controlled-release nitrogen and a bulk blending fertilizer of same grade used ammonium sulfate, urea, superphosphate and potassium chloride were applied to Nijisseiki pear trees growing in large pots with volcanic ash soil. The authors tried to examine some effects of these fertilizers on the growth, the yield, the fruit quality and the leaching losses of nutrients from the soil. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. In the trees applied the compound fertilizer, the tree growth, the yield and the fruit quality were superior to those applied the bulk blendings. 2. The nitrogen content of leaves in the trees applied the compound fertilizer was slightly higher than in the trees for bulk blendings. 3. The leaching loss of nitrogen, especially nitrate form, from the soil applied the bulk blendings was remarkable in comparison with that from the soil for the compound fertilizer.
