The present study aimed to clarify the characteristics of professors who were liked or disliked by undergraduates. A total of 603 undergraduates were asked to rate the appropriateness of each characteristic of an imaginary professor (including an associate professor, or a lecturer) they liked on a 6-point scale. They were also asked to rate the appropriateness of each characteristic of an imaginary professor they disliked. Analysis of the highest ratings which were allocated indicated that likeable professors were considered to give interesting, comprehensive, and well presented lectures, and have friendly, gentle, and pleasant personalities. However, disliked professors were considered to give uninteresting, incomprehensive, and badly presented lectures, and be frequently angry, ironic, and selfish. The results indicate that the quality of lectures and the personality of a professor determine whether he, or she, is liked or disliked.
