［特集］図書館サイトに付加価値を（２）The Nagasaki University Library established the “Metadata Database of Japanese Old Photographs in Bakumatsu-Meiji Period,” an image database of early Japanese photographs conformed to the Dublin Core element set and the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAIPMH), and made it public via the Internet. Since then, this database and the existing “High-Definition Image Database of Old Photographs of Japan” have been conveying a vast amount of information on Japanese modernization and attracting a huge number of visitors from home and abroad. The success of these distinguished websites has become one of the most significant achievements of our University and also a great contribution to society. The article reports, from the point of view of librarians, what this database is for, how it was constructed, how it has been used, and in what way it will be more useful.
