The theory of value-form is Marx’s invention to explain the necessityof money for commodity exchange; in other words, why the value of acommodity must be expressed in price and exchanged only by money. The term exchange-value, very common in classical political economics, could neither identify nor thus solve this problem. Marx discoveredtwo opposing poles within the exchange-value, or an exchangerate between two commodities. These were the relative value-form andthe equivalent form. He pointed out that only the latter had directexchangeability with the former. He then asserted that the directexchangeability in the simple value-form was the key to solving theabove problem and the mystery of money. However, the author claims that Marx’s development of value-formsfrom the simple to the money-form, or the expression of commodityvalue in money, based on the definition of value as objectified sociallabor and the dual nature of labor, significantly impaired Marx’s greatachievement, leading to his failure to arrive at a final solution to theproblem. Examining closely Marx’s four value-forms individually, theauthor attempts to delve into such basic concepts as expression ofvalue, direct exchangeability, mystery of money and measurement ofvalue, without recourse to the basis of value, objectified labor. Further, he redefines these concepts more clearly. This is the first step in thecritique of the notion ‘labor values,’ which is very popular amongMarxist economists in the West, and in the rehabilitation of Marx’s lawof value.
