The ecological studies of Ise Bay have been carried out with special reference to the red tide blooms. In this paper are described mainly the oceanochemical character of the bay and abundance of phytoplankton. The bay water is influenced strongly by three rivers water which inflow into the inner part of the bay. Dissolved oxygen of the bottom water begins to decrease at the end of April to the beginning of May, and reaches the minimum less than 0.50cc/l in August. The low oxygen water mass spreads up to near surface layer. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the bay water ranges from 0.11 to 4.29 mg-C/l, and yearly mean is 1.29 mg-C/l. Distribution of DOC corresponds with the destribution of yearly mean chlorophyll-a contents. Organic carbon and nitrogen of the sediment are 24～29 mg-C/g. dry weight, 2.3～3.0 mg-N/g. d. w. respectively. The soluble iron content is mostly lower than 20 μm-Fe/l, and higher in the inner part of the bay. In annual variation of average chlorophyll-a content, three peaks were observed in February,June and October, and the value in June is about 5 fold of the October. The average value in the all area and the water column is <special>4.17mg/m3</special>. Standing crop of phytoplankton in the bay is estimated to be about 7,200 tons of carbon. No relation is observed between the variations of total inorganic nitrogen (TIN), phoshorus and an abundance of phytoplankton. At the bottom layer, development of low oxygen water mass was accompanied with increase of inorganic phosphorus in summer season. A high correlation, r=-0.97, was found between the phosphorus contents and log dissolved oxygen at the central part of the bay. It is highly probable that formation of a low oxygen water mass is caused by the decomposition of organic matter in the sediment. In June to July, increased soluble iron and TIN from the land run-off preseded the blooms of mixed population of diatom and dinoflagellates.
