This article summarizes the making of a joint study class for Japanese and foreign students at the Center for International Students (CIS). Foreign students who come to Mie University without sufficient Japanese command normally engage themselves in Japanese language courses at CIS. This means that they spend most of the time of the day with their fellow foreign students and that their chances to interact with Japanese students are limited. Those who have reached upper-middle or advanced levels can develop their language command more effectivelythrough opportunities to communicate with Japanese students. Japanese students canalso benefit from such opportunities which will lead them to cross-cultural understanding and train them to be able to survive in the global environment. Thus, CIS decidedto accept Japanese students into advanced courses. Once it was announced, numerous Japanese students beyond the capacity at CIS applied to the course. After the selection procedure, 12 foreign students and 18 Japanese students were accepted and were divided into three discussion groups. Thegroups were engaged in discussions under the topics given by the instructor or chosen by themselves. The students took turns to chair the discussions and submitted mid-termand final written reports. Details of these processes are provided in the article. Overall, the students, enthusiasm with the class work was confirmed in their high attendance rate and course evaluation.
