A united support system for international students to improve Japanese ability has been organized in April 2003 by three teachers from different faculties. One or two Japanese student(s) support(s) an international student in studying Japanese in various ways ninety minutes a week. The group of Japanese students is a volunteer club, and carries out not only support but also various kinds of events throughout the year. In the results of the questionnaire to the students in the latter half of 2003, we can find out the needs and trends of the students. In the beginning of the support activities both sides of students desire that their partner should be a person who gives them the intimate and precise knowledge about each other that they desire. While they continue supporting, each of them finds out new points of view about cultural differences, the situation of the partner, difficulties of teaching, importance of their own culture, and so on. The experience makes both students grow into adults with cosmopolitan points of view and deeper understanding of foreigners. It is also essential for teachers to support their growth as specialists of Japanese education, staff of the university, and elders.
