This is an introductory study on the concept of sacred space as it would have been understood by the Maori during the classical period of their cultural efflorescence. After defining the scope of the paper, nine categories of sacred space are discussed. Each of these discussions makes clear that, in the context of Maori culture, space is not sacred in itself but is subsumed into the sacred by way of ritualistic association with the ancestors of a tribe and their divine progenitors. Thanks are tended to the Ningen Kankyo Gakkai for making available sixteen pages in this journal for the presentation of my research results.
