Liquid/solid dielectrics are very widely used in high voltage power transformers, in power cables, and also in capacitors, although such composite dielectrics are much more complex in their behavior than one-component dielectrics. In practice, these insulation systems consist of non-uniform electric fields. Therefore, it is very important to investigate the breakdown characteristics of polymer/oil composite dielectrics under non-uniform electric fields. In this paper, the breakdown voltage was measured for a needle to plane electrode system in silicone oil, with polyvinyl chloride films on the plane electrode. The results showed that the dielectric breakdown phenomenon does not occur when the distance between a needle electrode and a sample was separated, and applied voltage was small. Moreover, the dielectric breakdown voltage increased as the distance between a needle electrode and a sample increased.
