In 1990 the Ministry of Construction of Japan started urban and rural riverside renewal projects to improve landscape both ecologically and aesthetically all over the country. Considerable efforts have been invested since then to eventually see interesting realizations today. In urban areas, however, many difficulties have been encountered due to political, economical and technical constraints, and as a result, we find a limited number of projects launched so far. In the circumstances, the authors propose to practice minor modifications on river walls of urban waterways such as changes of the forms, the construction materials and the colors to improve riverside landscape. In order to test the effectiveness of the proposal, the authors effectuated inquiries with visual simulation methods using computer graphics.After investigating several rivers, the authors discuss the effectiveness of the CG simulation method in particular concerning the method stability as well as the reliability of the employed CG simulation models.In this paper the authors refer to their new CG model based upon VR technique, which was used in comparison with the previous CG model. The new model was used to reconfirm certain results that were not within authors expectation.
