Quercus serrata-dominated deciduous forests of Tsushima were described as a new plant association and named Platycaryo-Quercetum serratae.It is one of the secondary,or substitute,communities in the evergreen broad-leaf forest region of Tsushima.The canopy trees are 5 to 12 m high and 5 to 15 cm dbh. The association is distinguished from the other related communities by the presence of Platycarya strobilacea,Rhododendron mucronulatum(including var.ciliatum)and Phaenosperma globosum,and is further subdivided into two subassociations: Subassocjation of Quercus variabilis and Typical Subassociation.The former is found on shallow soils and distinguished from the latter by the presence of Qucrcus variabilis,Spodiopogon sibiricus,Albizia julibrissin,Pueraria lobata,Scutcllaria tsusimensis and Melampyrum roseum,of which the two last-mentioned are also character species of the association.
