Electron energy loss spectra of Fe, Co, Ni and Cu have been measured in the energy range of primary electrons between 500eV and 1000ev and at various incident angles of the electrons as basic data of spin polarized electron spectroscopy by electron excitation. Overall energy resolution including those of the electron gun and the electron energy analyzer varied from 360 to 710, depending upon the energy of the primary electrons. Intensities of electrons scattered inelastically to low energy region were less than 0. 1 relatively to those of electrons scattered elastically. No sharp peaks were observed in the present loss spectra in contrast to the case of light metals such as Be, Mg and Al. Most of the structures in the present spectra are attributed consistently to those losses which are due to the excitations of the bulk and surface plasmons and due to the transition of electrons from the valence band to the conduction band. From the correspondence between experimental and theoretical values of the plasmon losses, it is suggested that not only 4s electrons but 3d electrons take part in the plasma oscillations in the present malals.
