Objective: The objective of this study was to examine whether or not Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) increases the risk of obstetric complications in Africa. Methods: We searched articles on FGM and complication of obstetrics using two keywords of “FGM” and “complication” through “SCOPUS” within past ten years from 1996. We found articles with statistical data and summarized them. Results: We found two articles related to FGM and complication of obstetrics. FGM significantly increased the risk of episiotomy, perineal tear, postpartum blood loss, and caesarean section. Women with typeⅡFGM had higher risk of complications than those with typeⅠFGM. Furthermore, women with type ⅢFGM had had higher risk of the complication than typeⅡFGM. Conclusion: FGM appears to significantly increase the risk of the complication of obstetrics. Therefore, obstetric specialists such as midwives and maternity nurses should contribute know the risk of these complication and provide health education to help African women abandon this practice.
