From mathematical investigation it was found that when the earth solidified, it was subjected, under gravitation, to a great horizontal compressive force, as a result of which the maximum shearing stresses induced near the surface of the same earth gave rise to many cracks within the superficial layer. Although it is possible for the stresses caused by temperature change in the initial stage of the solid earth to result in the failure of rocks, the same condition could be realized were the surface layers respectively complete spherical shells without any faults. If the condition of the earth under gravitational forces and that under temperature change were initially the same, the gravitational effect would be considerable, whence it would hold that shallow earthquakes and deep earthquakes are both, residual phenomena of the failure of the crust under gravitational forces that occurred in the initial stage of the solid earth.
