1) Generally speaking, in the case of rare events, the frequency distribution of earthquakes in a region and during the initial epoch may be satisfactorily expressed by the probability function, or Poisson's formula, although we have rather complex frequency distributions as the result probably of counting the number of earthquakes in several locatities and in several epochs of varying simultaneous activities. 2) There are some correlations between two successive frequencies, besides the tendency that the deeper the focal depths the fewer the earthquakes that are dependent on one another. The writer thinks it desirable to examine the correlations between successive frequencies in the cases of after-shocks and preparatory shocks for the purpose of gaining knowledge of conditions in regions seismically active. The writer's cordial thanks are due to Prof. M. Ishimoto and Dr. N. Nasu for their kind advice and encouragement in the course of this study.
