(1) A remarkable forerunner of earthquake motion obtained at Hongo and Mitaka has been fully discussed and plausibly elucidated by Prof. Matuzawa and others. The present writer has studied the angle of incidence of the first motion and it becomes approximately 4° as the mean value at both stations, its fluctuation being small. (2) From this value of angle of incidence, 0.5km/sec, is determined as the velocity of dilatational wave in the most superficial layer. (3) The angle of incidence of the first motion seems to vary with its period such that 4° when the period is 0.4sec. or so and 50° when the period is about 30sec. (4) A few remarks are added to explain some characteristic features of seismogram. In conclusion the writer wishes to express his heartfelt thanks to Prof. Matuzawa for his kindness in revising of the original n nuscript and valuable advices. Further the writer wishes to record his debtedness to Dr. H. Kawasumi.
