A pair of all-silica tiltmeters devised by Professor M. Ishlmoto was installed in a room of uniform temperature at the branch station of the Earthquake Research Institute, the station being situated about half-way up Mt. Tukuba. With these instruments, two components of the earth-tiltings were observed continuously since the 23rd of December, 1927. At first, the instruments were so adjusted as to give a deflection of 2 cm. on the photographic record for each second of tilting, but since the 20th of June, 1928, the amplifications were changed into one-half that of the original size because of the constant occurrence of tiltings much larger than had been anticipated for such a rigid granitic mountain block.
