本稿の目的は、エドガー･アラン･ポーの「ベレニス」を精神分析的に読むことで倒錯に内在する転覆性を明らかにし、主人公のフェティシズムを病的なものではないと論じることである。幻視家である主人公はファンタジーに取り囲まれているが、そのファンタジーは彼のフェティシズムの欲望を支えている。主人公は初め、ベレニスの歯の幻影44を求めていたが、彼女の死を知らされたとき、歯の幻影44は恐ろしい記憶に置き換えられる。彼はこの記憶を分節化しようと試みるが、それに伴う困難さは彼の主体形成における奮闘を暗示する。彼の幼い頃の記憶と結びつく部屋で、まるで発話された言葉のように音をたてて散らばる歯は、ベレニスの不在44を暗示するが、このときベレニスは望4まれる対象44444として描写される。彼のフェティシズムは物質化444された444歯を表出させるまでの心理的過程を描写するものであり、その歯によって、彼は、苦悩の背後にある歓喜44を瞬間的に再構築444することができる。The purpose of this article is to present a psychoanalytic reading of Edgar Allan Poe's “Berenice” and to shed light on the subversiveness inherent in perversions in order to suggest that the protagonist's fetishism is not pathological. The narrator of the story, Eg?us, is affected by fantasies, which support his fetishistic desires. He pursues “the phantom” of Berenice's teeth. His fantasies are replaced with horrible memories when it is announced to him that “Berenice ［is］ no more.” His strenuous attempts to articulate these recollections are indicative of his struggle for subject formation. The “materialized” teeth, scattering “with a rattling sound,” can be considered as the symbolical representation of the thought that was given utterance to in his library, with which his earliest memories are connected. Berenice is described as “the wished-for object” with the fetishized teeth, which paradoxically indicates “the absence” of Berenice. Eg?us's fetishism depicts a psychic process of representing the “materialized” teeth, with which he could momentarily “reconstruct” his recollections of “the ecstasies” behind his mental agonies.
