• This is to analyzes the operational behavior and technical progress among Philippine domestic banks, using micro-level data on individual banks. First, we summarize their major business activities and gain insight on how the structure is changing. Then, we formally estimate the cost function of Philippine domestic banks using panel data covering a seven-year period (1990-96). The presence of economies of scale and economies of scope is investigated and technical progress in the banking industry is measured. In addition, the results of analysis for the Philippines are compared with those of similar studies on Thailand conducted by the author previously.アジア危機の発生の重要な要因として、ASEAN 各国の銀行経営に多大の問題があったことはよく指摘されるところである。しかし、各国の個別銀行のマイクロデータを利用したフォーマルな経済分析は、これまで極めて僅かしかなかった。本稿の目的は、フィリピン地場銀行の経営構造および技術進歩についてマイクロデータを利用した計量分析を行なうことである。本稿の分析結果によれば、フィリピン地場銀行ではタイと比較して規模経済性がより強く観察されるとともに、技術進歩にも違いが伺われた。タイでは機械化により労働生産性を高めて融資規模の拡大を追求するような傾向が見られたのに対して、フィリピンでは融資規模の拡大を抑制しつつ投下資金の収益性を高めるような傾向が観察された。本稿の分析結果は、アジア危機前に両国の金融行政に違いがあり、プルーデンシャル規制がタイでは緩かったのに対してフィリピンでは厳しかったという事実と対応的である。このことは、途上国の金融自由化政策において、金融行政が銀行経営に与える影響を十分に配慮することが重要であることを示唆するものといえる。
