An "Improved Health and Healthy Living Seminar" targeting local residents and individuals working in the area was implemented on a trial-and-error basis by this university starting in 2003 to prevent lifestyle-related illnesses; this year marks the second year of the project. This paper reports the results of the "Improved Health and Healthy Living Seminar (seven classes in total)" conducted in 2004 based on measurement of physical fitness and a basic medical check-up performed each class along with a health-related questionnaire given to seminar attendees. A total of 147 individuals participated, and physical fitness and check-up results of seminar attendees who attended at least four of the seven classes were studied. Results suggested that while physical fitness and check-up results remained the same, blood pressure levels decreased slightly (though not significantly). In addition, changes such as heightened health awareness from before and after attending the "Seminar" were seen; at the same time, the seminar was also effective, based on results of the questionnaire, from the perspective of increasing the length of time one walked daily and promoting exercise habits as part of daily routines. Moreover, seminar attendees also broadened their circle of friends by communicating with other attendees, so there was a certain effect as a result of participating in the "Seminar." With regard to education for student volunteers, students played a major role that included preparations before and after the "Seminar," clean-up, supplementary exercise instruction for seminar attendees and concern for the elderly. The project has a beneficial effect on students as well in social settings such as future student activities. There was also a positive effect at work on seminar attendees based on impressions such as feeling invigorated by the chance to meet with young students. This university's "Improved Health and Healthy Living Seminar" has only just begun and is still in its infancy. In the future, a system will be established to maintain and improve "health and physical fitness" for seminar attendees not simply in the short-term but in the long term as well. This system will involve, for example, individual programs that can be done at home, specifically including interpersonal programs based on human behavioral science, i.e. habits, nutritional theories, etc., exercise programs in accordance with the participant's physical characteristics and physical fitness, and programs consisting of exercise habits. This system will allow this university to serve as a viable center for the distribution of health-related information and thus providing the common good.
