In this paper Petrarch's poems and their influence on Shakespeare, in the writing of his sonnets, wm be discussed. In Petrarch's poetry, he employed an association of imagery, such as the linking of morte (death) with occhi (eyes). This and similar associations appear later in Shakespeare's work, including the use of the image of the sun to indicate divinity, as used by Petrarch in writing of his beloved Laura. This paper will follow the development of this imagery and conclude that Shakespeare's image of the sun also derives from Petrarch.
