It is well known that under long-time sustained or repeated loads the strength of concrete is about 10 to 35 per cent less than that obtained by a common short-time test. Recently several investigations have pointed out that the long-time strength of concrete can be considered to be closely related to the critical stresses of concrete in deformation and micro-cracking behavior in a short-time test. Such an approach is very simple and practical in comparison with direct creep failure or fatigue tests. In this paper the critical points in deformation (in volumetric strain-, Poisson’s ratio-log stress-log strain diagrams and length of micro-crack) obtained by a common short-time test on concrete and those in creep strain and micro-cracking behavior of concrete observed by a short-time creep test are discussed in connection with the long-time strength of concrete.
