A Basic Introduction of ECAR : Energy-Connectivity Aware Routing in Mesh Network with Mobile Mesh Routers

The sustainability of wireless networks in emergence situations highly depends on the node connectivity and node energy. A network breakdown starts from the loss of node connectivity, and one of the major reasons of node connectivity loss is the energy depletion in the battery powered networks. In this paper, we introduce an energy-connectivity aware routing protocol (ECAR) for the mesh networks with battery power supplies in the emergency situations. We study the diversity of mesh point connectivity in the network with regard to its local and global connections to the gateway and other mesh points (MPs). ECAR prolongs the mesh network lifetime by enabling energy balance of MPs and solve energy bottleneck problems in which MPs around gateway deplete energy faster than MPs far away from the gateway. ECAR sets up an integrated metric to efficiently select nodes in a route according to both node energy and connectivity, leading to the automatic adjustment of node energy utilization and keeping the network connectivity. The ECAR based mesh networks also include the utilization of mobile mesh routers (or mobile MPs). We also study the impact of using mobile mesh routers to prolong the network lifetime, with the integration of the proposed energy efficient and connectivity aware routing.
