In this review, current situation of our studies for realizing CO_2-free hydrogen global supply chains are shown. The Japanese government has now been forced to review the Basic Energy Plan that was authorized in June 2010, in the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake followed by the severe accident at Fukushima nuclear power plants. Before the disaster, we, The Institute of Applied Energy (IAE) had realized that it was not clear how CO_2-free hydrogen would contribute to solving various energy and environmental issues, or that prospects were not clear for large demand of CO_2-free hydrogen other than Fuel Cell Vehicles (FCVs). In this connection, we organized a voluntary "Concept Study Group" in March 2011, and its succeeding "Action Plan Study Group" has now been held since April 2012. Through the quantitative studies using IAE's simulation model (GRAPE), the common recognition was built that hydrogen could contribute to energy security and increase in zero-emissions electric power ratio in Japan. The results of hydrogen demand questionnaires to experts show that CO_2-free hydrogen could start to be introduced in the fields other than vehicles as well around 2020-2030 if the hydrogen come to be cost-competitive, and large amount of CO_2-free hydrogen would be demanded around 2050.
