This study dealt with a narrative text and considered a method of reading instruction on it, which aimed at achieving a close reading in English. For that purpose, this study applied stylistics, which has been used mainly for the analysis of literature, to the analysis of reading textbooks used in senior high schools, and revised a stylistics checklist for analyzing a text and making reading questions. To examine the use of the checklist, 43 university students, taking a class in English language education, analyzed a text and created questions with the checklist and evaluated it. Some of their opinions were that the checklist provided them with fresh as well as significant viewpoints for analyzing the text and helped them to better understand its content. It is concluded that the stylistics checklist can be used as a guideline for analyzing senior high school English textbooks.
